Over time, a glossmeter’s accuracy can drift due to general wear, environmental exposure, or physical shock, which may compromise measurement reliability. To maintain confidence in test results, regular servicing and calibration are strongly recommended. This ensures the instrument continues to deliver accurate, consistent, and reliable measurements, which are critical in manufacturing and quality control environments.
Calibration is essential for three main reasons: Accuracy (true and precise results), Consistency (repeatable measurements), and Standardisation (compliance with industry standards). Glossmeters are calibrated using NMI-traceable master calibration tiles to maintain linearity across their measuring range. It is recommended to perform at least annual recalibration (minimum 1 year), as calibration tiles can become contaminated or drift over time. If a tile is scratched or damaged, it must be immediately recalibrated or replaced to prevent incorrect readings. While international standards recognise the tile as the calibrated artefact, manufacturers also advise routine instrument checks depending on usage and operating conditions.
