Description
The HI96832 measures the refractive index of propylene glycol solutions and converts it to percent volume or freezing point using internationally recognized standards. Accurate glycol concentration is critical in beverage chillers and industrial cooling systems: too little glycol risks freezing and damage, while excessive glycol reduces system efficiency. Automatic temperature compensation ensures precise readings regardless of sample temperature, making the meter reliable in labs, production lines, or field operations.
This digital refractometer employs a yellow LED light, prism, lens, and linear image sensor to detect the refractive index of the sample. The dual-level LCD allows simultaneous display of measurements and temperature, while quick 1.5-second readings require only a 100 μL sample. Other features include one-point calibration with distilled water, a stainless steel sample well for corrosion resistance, battery life indicators, and IP65-rated ABS casing, providing durability and ease of use for routine propylene glycol analysis.

Making a Standard Solution
To make an X % Propylene Glycol Solution, follow the procedure below:
- Place container (such as a glass vial or dropper bottle that has a cover) on an analytical balance.
- Tare the balance.
- volumetrically add X mL of high purity propylene glycol (CAS #: 57-55-2; MW 76.09) to a 100 mL Grade A volumetric flask.
- Use distilled or deionized water to bring the flask close to the total volume, mix, allow the solution to return to room temperature.
- Once the solution has returned to room temperature use distilled or deionized water to bring the total volume to 100 mL. Mix solution well before use.
