The HI96804 is a tough, portable digital refractometer for food items made to report the amount of invert sugar by weight in aqueous solutions containing sugar. Results are reported by the HI96804 with an accuracy of 0.2%. The meter’s functioning is streamlined by having just two buttons: one for calibrating with distilled or deionized water and the other for taking measurements.

The refractive index of a sample is used by the HI96804 to obtain measurements. The refractive index gauges the behavior of light as it travels through the sample. Light will refract and reflect differently depending on the makeup of the sample. The refractive index of the sample can be examined by measuring this activity with a linear image sensor and utilized to ascertain its physical characteristics, such as concentration and density. The HI96804 uses an LED light, prism, and lens in addition to a linear image sensor to enable measuring.
